Imagine a new mother, overjoyed with the birth of her new baby. She’s given birth at the hospital, received excellent care for herself and newborn and is ready to be discharged. But the happy picture is interrupted by the fact that this mother is unable to provide the basic necessities for her child. Set to leave the hospital on a cold winter day, the young mother does not have a blanket to bring her baby home in.
It’s hard to imagine for most of us, but according to our hospital nursing staff, Essentia Health–Deer River serves many families per year who do not have a blanket to bring their newborn home in. The DRHC Volunteers have responded to this need and sought to provide help by purchasing newborn wraps, ensuring that every baby leaves the hospital in a warm blanket.
This is just one of the ways the DRHC Volunteers serve our healthcare facility on a daily basis. From staffing the gift shop and answering questions at the information desk, to assisting with activities in the nursing home, Volunteers support the Deer River community with a smile and a heart of service.
